5 Must-Read Romance Books With the Best Plot Twists!

Caitlin

I have some exciting news, book friends. I think I’ve finally figured out my reading preferences! I used to think I didn’t enjoy straight-up romance books, but it turns out I love romantic mysteries, thrillers, and anything with a jaw-dropping plot twist. Oh, and a little spice never hurts either! 🌶️

So, I’ve gathered up some of my favorite romance books with mind-blowing twists to share with you. No spoilers, I promise! I’ll give you a quick synopsis of each book and explain why I loved them. If you have similar recommendations, drop them in the comments—I’m always looking for my next great read! Watch this as a video here on my BookTube.

1. When We Had Forever by Shaylin Gandhi

my new favorite romance book!

Don’t you love casually picking up a book and it winds up becoming one of your new favorites? I’m not even a huge romance reader, but When We Had Forever by Shaylin Gandhi completely blew my mind (6 stars!). I can’t believe it only has around around 300 reviews on Goodreads!

When We Had Forever is a forbidden love, enemies-to-lovers story about Mina, a young widow who thought she had the perfect husband—until he died in a car crash. As she grieves, she discovers he had secrets she never knew about. And then there’s his identical twin, who’s the complete opposite of her late husband: a bad boy with tattoos and a sworn enemy of Mina…

The emotional depth of this book is incredible, and the plot twist is absolutely wild. I love the rich imagery and details in which the characters were described, like the romantic interest having a “smoke and bourbon voice”, or eyes “a shade of blue she’d never seen before”. *Swoon*

Plus, if the phrase “strip Monopoly” piques your interest, you’re in for a treat. When We Had Forever is a spicy, emotional, and unforgettable read that I already want to reread!

2. The No-Show by Beth O’Leary

best plot twist!!!

The No-Show by Beth O’Leary book reminded me of John Tucker Must Die, but it actually passes the Bechdel test (yay!). It follows three very different women in London who all seem to be dating the same man—until he stands them all up on Valentine’s Day. What unfolds is a charming, funny, and heartwarming story with one of the best plot twists I’ve ever read!

One of the women is a tree surgeon (yes, that’s a real job, and it’s fascinating to read about!), and the banter between the characters is top-notch. The twist completely recontextualizes the story, and I was left in awe of how cleverly it was done. If you love witty dialogue and unexpected turns, The No-Show is for you.

3. Touch by Olaf Olafsson

the ending 🥹

Touch by Olaf Olafsson was a rare book choice for me because it’s written by a man about an older man—something I don’t usually gravitate toward. But Touch completely captivated me. It’s about a retired man in Iceland who receives a Facebook message out of the blue from a Japanese woman he fell in love with 50 years ago while studying in London in the 60s.

Back then, he worked at a small Japanese restaurant and fell for the owner’s daughter. But one weekend, she disappeared, and the restaurant was gone when he returned. Now, decades later, he’s determined to find out what happened to her. This story is deeply moving, beautifully written, and had me in tears by the end. It’s a poignant exploration of love, loss, and second chances. I never saw this plot twist coming! This book was adapted into a film I’m still trying to see ASAP!

4. Pen Pal by J.T. Geissinger

chili pepper alert!

This book ruined my life in the best way possible—it’s all I can think about! Pen Pal is a mysterious, steamy romance about a woman whose husband has just passed away. Strange things start happening in her house, and she begins receiving letters from a man named Dante who’s in prison. At the same time, she’s getting closer to her very attractive handyman, who’s helping her fix up her home.

I can’t say much more without spoiling it, but the plot twist in Pen Pal is insane. It’s dark, intense, and utterly addictive. The smut is off-the-charts hot, and the emotional depth will leave you reeling. I’ve already joined the Pen Pal Decompression Facebook group because I needed to process this book with others. Trust me, you’ll be thinking about it long after you finish.

5. Under Loch and Key by Lana Ferguson

spicy romantasy alert!

This one’s a romantasy (romance + fantasy) with a twisty plot and a touch of monster smut—surprisingly good lol! Under Loch and Key follows an American woman who travels to Scotland to scatter her father’s ashes in his hometown near Loch Ness. Her father always told her stories about the Loch Ness Monster, and as she uncovers her family’s mysterious history, she finds herself drawn into an enemies-to-lovers romance with a local.

The blend of fantasy, romance, and mystery is so well done, and the plot twist is both surprising and satisfying. If you’re looking for something unique with a dash of spice, Under Loch and Key is the book for you.

Final Thoughts

These five books have completely changed the way I think about romance novels. If you’re like me and need a little more than just a love story to stay hooked, these twisty, spicy, and emotional reads are perfect for you. Let me know in the comments if you’ve read any of these or if you have similar recommendations—I’m always on the hunt for my next favorite book!

If you’ve ever tried reading manga on a standard tablet or phone, you know the struggle. Pages are either too small to appreciate the artwork, or you’re constantly pinching and zooming—hardly the immersive experience a good manga deserves.

Ereaders have evolved. A lot. Today, you can find devices with large, high-resolution screens, color E Ink for special editions, and even stylus support for annotating your favorite panels.
