Why 2025 Is My Year of Smut: Embracing Spicy Reads
For years, I tiptoed around the world of spicy romance books, too ashamed of the stigma to fully embrace them. While I had long been curious about reading “smut,” I considered it the literary equivalent of watching porn—something that made me feel a little dirty, if I’m being honest, and that historically hasn’t always respected women or promoted healthy perspectives on intimacy. However, as times change and we move into a more sex-positive, feminist-forward era (and as I grow into my own maturity) I’ve come to realize there’s absolutely nothing wrong with enjoying spicy romance books—or even outright smut—for countless reasons that I’ll explore.
In 2025, I’m officially letting go of that shame and embracing what brings me joy: books that bring on the chili peppers! 🌶 🥵 🔥 Because reading is reading, right? Who’s with me? Let’s get into what made me decide to change my mind about reading smut now that I’m in my 30s.
Breaking Free from the Stigma
People tend to be judgmental around reading steamy romance. I mean, would you be brave enough to read a book with a shirtless dude on the cover on the metro?
While explicit scenes in movies and TV shows are widely accepted, books with similar content are often treated differently. Maybe it’s because reading is seen as an intellectual pursuit, and smut—despite often being well-written—is considered “lesser” literature. Or maybe it’s just the outdated idea that women, in particular, shouldn’t be open about their enjoyment of sensual stories. Ugh.
But here’s the truth: enjoying spicy romance isn’t something to be embarrassed about. Books are about escapism, entertainment, and, sometimes, self-exploration. Reading is reading. If people can binge-watch sexy shows without shame, why should books be any different?
A New Chapter in My Life (and Bookshelf)
Now that I’m in my 30s, I’m prioritizing what truly brings me joy. This new phase of life is all about pursuing what I love without caring about external judgment. Reading has always been one of my biggest passions, and I’ve realized that ignoring certain genres out of self-imposed guilt is ridiculous. Even if the idea of my family seeing me singing smut’s praises is cringe.
Over the past year, I’ve dipped my toes into more romance subgenres, especially those with exciting plots, and—yes—plenty of spice. Some of my best recent spicy reads include Pen Pal by J.T. Geissinger, When We Had Forever by Shaylin Gandhi, and The Dream Harbor series. These books aren’t just about the spice; the incredible writing and characters have stuck with me for months after. Fictional book boyfriends have become my new Roman Empire. Or should I say, Roman emperors? *swoons thinking about Aiden from Pen Pal*
How Spicy Reads Are Enriching My Life
Surprisingly, diving into this genre has had a ripple effect on my life and #readinggoals… I have been absolutely tearing through books faster than ever before, and watching way less TV! My Kobo has become a new appendage—much to my partner’s dismay while waiting for our food in restaurants… Just one more paragraph!
Reading romance—especially books that explore deep intimacy and emotional connection—has also encouraged me to reflect on my own love life. It’s a reminder that passion, vulnerability, and open communication are important, both on and off the page 🙂
Beyond that, it’s just plain fun. There’s something exhilarating about a book that makes your heart race for reasons beyond just a shocking plot twist. I do love a good mystery thriller.
And after a long day, sometimes a little escapism in the form of a swoon-worthy, slow-burn romance with a high spice level is exactly what I need. Life is hard enough. We all deserve a little release! And sometimes a good laugh—like with Ruth Cardello’s “lighthearted utensil romance” series, which I reviewed here on my channel. These ridiculously funny spicy novellas have even inspired me to start writing my very own funny erotica story! Stay tuned for updates 😉
